'Borat' anthem plays for Kazakhstan shooter during ceremony
Can you imagine winning a medal in competition and then being insulted by having a spoof version of your country's national anthem play during the medal ceremony? That's exactly what happened to one athlete.
Maria Dmitrienko of Kazakhstan won the gold medal in the 75 target event at the Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait Thursday. Instead of hearing "My Kazakhstan" play during the medal ceremony, the spoof version of the anthem from Sacha Baron Cohen movie "Borat" played.
The lyrics from the fake anthem are extremely insulting. The movie is even banned in the country for its negative portrayal of Kazakhstan.
The spokesman for the country's foreign ministry demanded a thorough investigation of the matter. The team reportedly received an apology from the shooting federation's president.
So how does a mistake of such colossal proportions occur? They apparently downloaded the wrong version of the anthem from the internet. Yeah, I'll say.
