USA women's soccer team drawing heat over post-win wardrobe

The US women's soccer team have been criticized before for not being good sports. New Zealand's coach had a few choice words for their choreographed victory dances.
Now they are being called out for the shirts they chose to wear on the field after taking the gold from Japan in a close 2-1 bout,
The ladies had some Nike T-shirts (pictured above) that read "Greatness has been found" that were made for them in case they won. After the final second ticked away, they donned the shirts and ran across the field carrying American flags.
Sports writer Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times wrote on his Twitter account:

Jerrard Peters, a soccer reporter for TheScore.com, Tweeted on his account:

Who's to say what's wrong or right in this situation? The Japanese women's soccer team handled their loss with an admirable amount of dignity and both teams seem to have a great deal of respect for each other and that's not to say they would or wouldn't have done the same if they beat the US. Besides, it's not like Team USA pulled a Randy Moss by mooning the opposing team's fans or did anything that Terrell Owens has ever done as an athlete.
After all, it's just a game. Let the ladies enjoy their victory. They've earned it.

Oh the US is celebrating with T-shirts and they are a problem. Well, I have a problem with the Brits toteing bags quoting "I am renting to a fat American." That was rude to say the least after they were collecting money from those Americans.
-
Political?
They are a disgrace to us Americans. It's no wonder we are called classless, ugly, fat and stupid. Comments like yours are as self-serving as the t-shirts they wore. -
You're the only discrace to Americans that I see here.
-
where do I sign up ??
-
It's an advertisment for heaven's sake. It's their way of not having to pay. Start noticing these self grandiose comments on all the conversations after msn's articles on line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on...are day jelus cuz day not american.
-
What has that got to do with the topic at hand??
-
Nothing, it's a sales pitch, and the story is a made up lie to get you to join and pay for a dating service.
-
Get off these sites. They are for people interested in the article, not for sales people of some misleading dating sites. Especially with outright blatant lies about your ich boyfriend.
-
I am in total agreement!!!!!!
-
That is becouse you have no clue what the hell your talking about!!
-
Day proud of day acomplishmants...aint nuttin wrong wit dat. GO USA !!!

Your post is another embarrassment to us Americans: 'Where do I get me one of dose tshirts??? I just gots to have one. Utha countrees just jelus. Day dont care fo da USA but day want to see Micky Mouse, Hollywood stars, n swim at our beaches. Who say we cant dance on a tennis cort or wear tshirts on a soccer field. We let peeps come here, burn our flag, go to our colleges, n protest for there own beleefs. Come on...are day jelus cuz day not american. '
That is the worst combination of English grammar and spelling I have EVER seen. Are you from the swamp?
'Dose, uta countries, I just gots, jelus, beleefs, dont, day.' PATHETIC, understand that? -
Learn to spell you illiterate moron.
-
Could you possibly speak/write in English??!!! Good Lord where did you go to school???
-
Proud to be an American? How about learning English as well as most Englilsh-speaking foreigners speak and write it? 'acomplishmants...aint nuttin wront wit dat..' Are you kidding me, you are a disgrace to America.
-
Morons...DaaRite is obviously a troll attempting to mock Americans by posing as an illiterate one. He's not very clever, as his punctuation ability doesn't match his apparent "lack" of spelling prowess.
And you all fell for it. -
i wishyou'd took advatage of the American education system when you climbed out of your tree. and that is my beleef.
-
Amen to that
-
I second that, although he'll think that second means silver, LOL.
-
This is a made-up story to get you to go to an expensive dating service with false promises.
-
yes and call your web site what it is whores are us
-
Where is yardbarkerbill's "disgrace"?
-
What in the world is a dis crace?
-
Couldn't agree more! They earned it, they deserve it, and they can flaunt it if they wish!
-
Totally agree. Is the US the only country where people can take a light hearted view? The problem is when people lose they get catty. Americans are cocky, unfortunately, much of the world is jealous and can't take it.
-
Than that makes it two of us. They have been disgraceful for years. Rapinoe 'comes out' before the Olympics. Not a good role model. Solo getting sent home several olympics ago after US lost gold. She criticized her teammate goalkeeper for letting in four goals and said she would have stopped them. Then, after winning goal in Bejing, they sneak guys into the Olympic Village, drink booze all night, and appear on the Day Show, slurring, and Solo confuses that she just won the World Cup v olympics. Then positive test for banned substance suppposedly for PMS cramps. I have spoken with several doctors, nurses, the have NEVER prescribed medication for that. Midol, over the counter. Then she writes a book, telling us about being born out of a conjugal visit. Enough? To boot, the classless t-shirts after anyone who knows about soccer saw that Canada was cheated by the ref for a bogus PK and Japan was not awarded one as blatant as they get. Coming from and American, I am disgraced.
-
I don't see how Megan Rapinoe is suddenly not a role model simply because she came out. I applaud her for that, she gives hope to other soccer players that it is okay to come out and play the beautiful game. Let them enjoy the fact that they won the gold medal. If you look at pictures and watched the celebration after, maybe you would have seen many of the US players, such as Abby Wambach and Hope Solo go over and give the Japan players hugs. It's a big moment for them, let them enjoy it without being attacked about their t-shirts or the fact that one of them recently came out. Go USA!
-
He or she is not alone. So I suppose that makes at least two of us. You are the disgrace. Extremist patriot fascist.
-
Dude or dudette , because you are born in North America, or South America doesn't make you american. For fact you are not from the USA. We don't talk about "us american." What the hell is that since when youspeak for 300 million people? Shut up!
-
Yes, being born in the Americas does so make you an American.
-
Not necessarily. If your parents have no Asian genes in them and they were at Japan giving birth to you, does that make you Asian?
-
Yes, idiot.
-
comment below viewing threshold
-
Wrong, it is legally being born here or a naturalized citizen. Do you know how many olympic athletes competed for the US and their heritage is foreign. Check your facts before you post moronic comments.
-
Anyone with an American passport is an American, like it or not. Ever heard of xenophobia? Look it up. Nice English, 'youspeak.' You don't speak for us Americans either, with your redneck comments and pathetic English.
-
You are clearly both classless and stupid, and I can only assume ugly and fat since you are such an expert on all of the above! Take up soccer. It is great aerobic exercise that will help you get rid of those ugly lbs you loath so much!. Maybe you and soccer boy Jarrad Peters could get together and share your hate for America!
-
If so many of you hate America, tell me why? do so many people want to com,e here and distore this Country
-
Nice English. These people who come here don't want to come here, the majority have no choice, e.g. the Mexicans who prefer to come here legally or illegally and save their families from proverty. I suppose that if your family had no health care, a family member dying, you would not move to a country where their life would be saved. Typical uninformed ignorance. I have travelled the world and they think we are by far the most arrogant group of people, as proven by your comment. And poorly educated, as also proven by your iliteracy. Back to the swampland.
-
They worked hard, as did ALL the national teams. It wouldn't bother me one single bit if another country wore that. It's not like they said anything bad about any country. Hell, anyone would feel like Queens of the sport if they won too. This whole thing is silly to even call this a disgrace. Too many haters out there. Get a grip people!
-
To the victors....the spoils. They earned the right to wear the shirts...
-
you are a freaking idiot! im sick and tired of people like you wanting to be politcally correct. they just won a gold medal at the olympics let them celebrate wahtever way they want to. you probably wouldnt know anything about victory because you probably stay in the house spouting your ignorance on the computer, you wouldnt know anything about being an athlete!
-
Being an athlete is not the problem. It is people like Terrell and ochocinco that make Americans look like arrogant classless idiots. This t-shirt was not that offensive, and yes, they should be proud,
but all the "American Exceptionalism" folks need to remember that just because you aren't from Texas doesn't mean that you aren't human.
What a bunch of arrogant braggarts! There are a lot of people that are riding on the coattails of American achievement that only have the luck of their place of birth as proof of their worthiness.
Does it not embarrass you that proper respect is not given to other humans around the world?
Be patriotic, not idiotic -
Excellent Comment and SO TRUE!!!!
-
Patriotism is not fascism. Nor xenophobia, look it up.
-
Being politically correct is proper and noble. Take a minute to think about what you're saying. It's wrong to be correct. When did that start being correct? So, I guess you're comfortable reading other people's minds?
Under those rules, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you're white, republican, and right wing. -
And you, bradelstix, are a bigot!
-
Political Correctness is not proper or noble. It is peer pressure to follow the crowd instead of speaking one's mind. One can do that without insulting others. It's called common courtesy, and it does not require one to sacrifice one's beliefs or the freedom to express them. Wearing the shirts was nothing more than celebration. Get over it.
-
Being politically correct sucks balls. It leads to failure. I suggest spending less time thinking about how you say something so as not to hurt anyone's feelings and spend a little more time putting in some sweat equity in your life. By the way illegal aliens are illegal not whatever term that obummer and his staff have come up with. Radical Islamic terrorist are radiacal islamic terrorist not whatever term obummer and his idiot crew have come up with.
-
Another embarrassing American. What do Islamic terrrorists have to do with regarding this story. Look up xenophobic fascist and your picture will be right next to the definition. An American just massacred Americans at a movie theater, another bomb a Sikh temple and killed an American guard, and a third just set fire to a Muslim mosque. I am certain you don't care, think it was great, and don't even know the difference between Sikhs and Muslims. Too bad, you perpetuate the world perspective of arrogant and ignorant Americans. Just like Mitt. Swam trash.
-
Typical. What I'm sick of is insecure, inferior people drafting behind Americans who actually achieve something and then act like they're entitiled to an egocentric victory lap. Self-centered people with no class or civility, just like all but a couple of responders on this thread, make the rest of us Americans look as ignorant and myopic as they are. Those shirts that the team wore were revolting, like all of the other crass slogan trash that Nike's been shovelling out the last few years. But, the average American will wildly applaud them, because that's exactly what makes you average.
-
Perfect.
-
They are a disgrace to Americans by celebrating their hard work and accomplishments in the form of a harmless t-shirt? When you win a gold medal at the Olympics, YardBarker, then maybe you can show us what an American athlete is supposed to do. Until then, shut your mouth and clap your hands.
-
"American athlete is supposed to do".....show both sportsmanship, and BE good sportsmen, that's what is supposed to be done. Try looking at America from the outside in, not from the inside out.
-
1) They are sportswomen. Get it right, idiot.
2) Did you even watch the game? If you did, you would have seen that they exhibited complete sportswomanship after winning.
3) USA USA USA. -
SportsWOMEN... you're kidding me right?
-
Do they have penises or vaginas? I can't remember which sex had which. I failed Intro to Biology in college, obviously.
-
Again, well stated. Rapinoe? Wambach? One already 'came out' and the other does not need to.
-
MORON, MORON, MORON. Learn soccer and then come back to us. If you know the history of the individuals on this team, you would know why the t-shirts were an affront to American pride and sportsmanship.
-
Well stated.
-
You are clearly misinformed about soccer and the entire history of the team, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe...Educate yourself, learn soccer and you shut up. Fascist extremist.
-
They are NOT a disgrace to real Americans. You may be called classless, ugly, fat and stupid but thats only because you are. I expect the next article to be on Bolt-the self proclaimed "greatest athlete in the world." from Jamacia and how smug, ugly and classless he is. Way to go girls!!
-
Bolt is wrong, and was called out on it by the US gold and silver decathlon winners last night. He is the fastest man competing now but they are the best in a variety of endeavors, better athletes. He was rightfully celebrating but lacked class in his over the top declaration, as did the USA womens soccer team.
-
Interestingly enough, although he is the greatest, Bolt, like our ladies soccer team, showed a sadly diminished amount of class. It's too bad, after such a great win.
-
You are entitled to your opinion of course but really you are going to compare the actions of the US womens team to Bolt? They put on a T-shirt; in what world does that make them disgraceful? Both teams played a great match and showed a great amount of sportsmanship throughout the match. Did you ever stop and think that the statement on the shirt is a metaphor?
-
How, by hugging his teammates, whom he helped? What did he do that was classless? Thank everyone in the stadium? Thank his teammates for pushing him? Thank his coach? JEALOUSY. Jamaica 1,2,3 in the 200m. Accept it and stop whining. US cannot win everything and never will.
-
Your lack of understanding is disgusting... Go to Nike's wesite and look up what their new slogan is... it was not self-serving... it was a plug for Nike. Regardless, these atheletes train for 4 years straight to find greatness... let them live it up and go back to your cubicle and continue your self-loathing. Don't rain on other parade because you have never had one.
-
So, the bar for class is now being set by Nike??!! How interesting. I guess it's lucky their logo wasn't something like, um, I don't know, how about " be great, not gay". Yeah, let's make it ok to use corporate sayings as an example as to why something is OK !!
-
Hey buddy. Next time you win an olympic gold medal, then (maybe) you can illustrate the proper protocol when it comes to celebration.
USA USA USA.
-
They are NOT a disgrace to real Americans. You may be called classless, ugly, fat and stupid but thats only because you are. Way to go girls!!!!
-
Hey political. At least when these women die and go to meet their creator, they have achieved greatness in the world He created. You on the other hand were born stupid, raised stupid, live stupid and will probably die stupid and the only achievement you can say you did before your creator is never changed from being stupid!!!!!!
-
What rock did you crawl out from under. Guess you have a direct line to the "Creator". Must be nice.
-
Yes bradelstix, I do have a direct line to Elohim the creator, Yahweh the almighty one and Yeshua the Saviour who is the Rock of Ages I speak from, If you knew what Yeshuas nabiy means, you would not be so ignorant in your reply which makes as stupid and ignorant as politica! Elohim created the rock you asked about me crawling out from under! I have had a direct line since May 21, 1972!
-
You are clearly not familiar with the world of soccer if you can label this as anything but a monumental achievement for the United States. The rest of the world has for a long time now considered the US as a joke in the world of soccer. As an american you should be ashamed to welcome that same disrespect to our USWNT as the rest of the world has done for so long now. The shirts were in no way directed toward anyone but the US women themselves and their ability to achieve what they perceive as greatness and they are right to do so.
-
Indeed, winning Olympic gold is a monumental achievement, one that even professional athletes making millions aspire to, but the gold medal itself and the medalists' podium ceremony should be more than enough to satisfy the winners as it has hundreds of other champions. Preplanning their own celebration and adding a self declaration of greatness may feed the egos of the team but detracts from the spirit of friendship that is part of the Olympic ideal. As happy as I am to have seen the team triumph I'm sorry a few misguided individuals have promoted the "me" generation and reinforced the image of the "Ugly American" in the eyes of many of our neighbors.
-
Disagree TOTALLY!! They worked their butts off for this, they won, and they have the right to express their feelings! They did not put down any other country, they did Not disprect any other country, they simply stated that greatness has been found and they waved the flag of their country! I am sick and tired of the PC jerks in the world! Shut the hell up and if you cannot be Proud of your country, get the hell out and go live somewhere else! Go USA!! Be Proud of their achievement, appllaud it, and Defend their Right to express their joy at the accomplishment and their love of Country!!
-
Do you really think that someone who doesn't agree with you 100% should "Shut the hell up and if (they) cannot be Proud of (their) country, get the hell out and go live somewhere else!"over a soccer game ? Did you go to school in a different America than I did?
-
Obviously he never went to school. Look at the English grammar and spelling.
-
We Americans can and will stay here whenever we want, no matter what white trash, fascist and patriotist extremists wish. Back to the swamp for you. And in-breading. BTW, nice English; Not disprect...Proud is not capitalized,, appllaud, Defend also not capitalized....appllaud misspelled,...' Back to English 101 and the swamp for you.
-
Respectfully disagree with you VoiceofSanity9.
"a self declaration of greatness may feed the egos of the team but detracts from the spirit of friendship that is part of the Olympic ideal."
They have every right to feed their egos considering they just won a gold medal. As far as I'm concerned every team there has a right to feed their ego as they all made it to the Olympics.
On what basis are you feeding yours? Because essentially what you're saying is that YOU dislike the way the American Team celebrated. YOU feel like the the podium ceremony should have been enough. Frankly, It's not about you.
Hell it's hardly even about America as a country, its about the Team. And their hard work paying off and earning a gold medal. Not a celebration of another teams loss as many are trying to skew it. There's a difference.
For example if you're happy you just bought your dream car and crank up the radio as you're driving down the street does that mean you're celebrating that people are waiting at the bus stop because they can't afford cars?
I hope people can be honest with themselves about why exactly they are so upset, its not the T-shirts. It's the fact that an American Team wore them after winning, because I doubt this article would exist if the Japanese had won and worn them. Hence the term "Ugly American," for whatever reason a lot of people dislike Americans and as a result are overly critical and always looking for "Ugliness" and negativity to justify generalization. Which is sad because they've blinded themselves to a lot of good things about Americans. -
Are you a wack job or what.......It is people like you that should leave our great country. I am so proud of all of the Americans that one Medals, whether it be Bronze, Silver or Gold.....I wish every one of the could have a T-Shirt or Hat to celebrate with.....If it offends you so much, bye bye.....Just leave America & go any where else...
-
Why don't you leave? Either that or back to the farm, swamp or other backward place you're from? Rednecks should not even be considered as Americans as inteligent and cultured foreigners who come here and gain their citizenship. Does the movie 'Deliverance' ring a bell? Probably not, you might not have tv where you live.
-
ff1212 - enough.
Your criticism of the spelling and punctuation of others is laughable, considering the above post. Your sentence structure is poor, and you lack originality. FYI: I-N-T-E-L-L-I-G-E-N-T. Need I say more? -
Well said.
-
Wrong.
-
Wrong. You obviously fit you screen name by your post and don't know soccer/football. Greatness is not winning an Olympic gold, it's the World Cup. Last time I checked, Japan has that. Then, winning on two cheating refs, pk vs a Canadian team which dominated in regular time and one not called against the US vs Japan. British Pretoleum is the primary sponsor of the US team. Any coincidence with the games being held in the UK. Don't think so.
-
As an American I do not feel disgraced nor do I feel that the t-shirts are in any way a disgrace. What would have been okay? We're #1? Give me a freaking break. The shirts did not insult the opponent, that were not profane, they simplly stated "Greatness Found". One (or a team in this case) may feel they are great after winning a gold medal in the Olympics.
-
No American should feel shame.........................except for the members of said soccer team.
-
The only shame there should be is for the loosers
-
You're the loser, not even knowing how to spell the word and using 'loosers.' You are the disgraceful American.
-
Why are they a disgrace..because they won a gold..they did nothing wrong
-
Who even intimated they are a disgrace for winning the gold?????? They are a disgrace for their classless actions, post victory.
-
That's all that counts? Winning the gold. With the help of the refs in the semi and final? Shame.
-
Apparently we are the only ones not allowed to celebrate our success. Ever hear a Brazilian or Argentinian apologize about their soccer prowess? No and you won't either. Perhaps you can lead the tour around the world apologizing for them. No matter our society is going down hill. We have to feel sorry we succeeded.
-
You find these T shirts offensive? Would "We accomplished or goal" have been more acceptable? What I find offensive is all of the People of Pennsylvannia who feel Joe Pa has been wrong by the media. The man turned his back on defenseless children in support of a sick man. How much more shameful can American conduct be than the lack of compassion at Penn State. You people are pathetic! ! ! ! ! Go crawl in the hole where your groundhog lives.
TiredOldMan43 -
Disgrace? They just won Gold for our country. They have worked hard for years and it paid again for them, again. The t-shirt slogan is not rude or demeaning to anyone. They won, they were great. It is that simple. Congratulations TEAM USA!
-
You are the disgrace to this country. You sit on your rear end, enjoying all of the things this country has to offer, let alone the give-away programs to those too lazy to work for them and all you can do is complain! DO NOT count yourself as an American. You haven't earned that right.
-
Well said Eaglenest!
-
yardbarkerbill,
comments like your should be keep to your self, when you write stuff like you did , you my friend are a disgrace to good people of the USA - See more comments >>
