Michael Phelps reportedly 'upset' with Tyler Clary over critical comments

US swimmer Tyler Clary made national headlines on Tuesday for his critical comments about fellow swimmer Michael Phelps, and the 14-time Olympic gold medalist is said to be "upset" with his teammate.
In comments to The Riverside Press-Enterprise published on Monday, Clary questioned Phelps' work ethic and said the swimming star is "asking to get beat." Former University of Michigan swim coach Jon Urbanchek, who is Clary's coach and also close with Phelps, says Michael is bothered by the comments.
“It wasn’t called for, and the timing — this should not be the news going into the Olympics,” said Urbanchek, according to The Baltimore Sun. “I hope the two boys will sit down and talk about it. I know Michael is a little bit upset.”
Clary meanwhile spent part of his day trying to do some damage control. He claimed his words were taken out of context and apologized to Phelps via Twitter.
"It's too bad that what I was actually trying to say was twisted," he told one fan. "I am honored to represent USA and swim alongside Michael."
Clary's backtracking could have been predicted for anyone who followed the Clyde Drexler-Magic Johnson mess, but it's hard to take his words as anything other than an attack on Phelps.
I guess we'll have to wait until later this month to have the mattered sorted out in the pool. And here I was thinking Ryan Lochte was trying to become Phelps' biggest rival this summer. Looks like the amount of people targeting him is rising.

Upset that Phelps is a cheater by smoking dope to relax him before competing? Why? No apologies necessary. Phelps is a cheat and should be stripped of his gold medals and kicked off the Olympic squad.
-
are you serious? cheating because he smoked weed to "relax him before competing"'? that has got to be the first time that I have ever heard of pot as a performance enhancing drug outside of the competitive eating circuit. get a grip, and maybe go smoke a j to "calm yourself down"
-
I really don't think that Phelps ever said that he smoked dope to relax him before competing.
-
And precisely what have YOU been smoking ? Extract from the stupid plant ? Oh, I forgot, you're the poster child for Pro-abortion
-
since when is a natural substance "dope".. Chairmans, Doctors, hek even Presidents smoked a little pot. Its a nerve relaxer dumb ass. Do your homework before you acuse anyone of "Doing drugs".... Like Dan says, smoke a J let us know how you feel after... LOL
GO PHELPS !!! -
WOW! This comment is a prime example of the ignorance some un-educated people have diverted to. Do you really think that Michael Phelps (one of the greatest Olympians of all time) is a cheater? How stupid can you get? In the words of Walter the Puppet "Dumb Ass!" The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Go back to school, study hard, become educated and then post your comments based on credible knowledge. Let me guess, you voted for Obama too didn't you? Dumb Ass!

....so he was about to jump in the pool and swim a race at that party where they snapped that picture of him smoking? For goodness sakes he was 19 and thrust into fame! He had just won 14 medals at the OLYMPICS! Let the boy celebrate and experiment a little! Pot doesn't make you a better swimmer TRUST ME. I really doubt any swimmer is going to smoke anything right before racing (if they want to be any good). Yes, let's fill our lungs with smoke right before having to physically exert ourselves with limited oxygen supply. Most people his age have experimented with pot or alcohol. Lay off, you obviously don't understand the sport of swimming.
-
What the hell is your problem? talking about taking things out of context! Phelps smoke some weed after the Beijing Olympics with some friends and unfortunately got caught on camera...big deal! almost everyone has smoked pot at least once in their lives and they can all tell you that Phelps would never be able to compete in a race as strenuous as these and be competitive. Pot is more like a sedative, not a performance enhancer...besides, with all the cameras around and the media swarming Phelps wherever he goes for his swim competitions, do you think he would be able to smoke anything without being caught? Wow, you are an idiot. Phelps is an american icon and the greatest medal winner in the world.

Love reading uninformed rants. Smell a Tea Partier here!

Here is what these fellow swimmers seem to be missing, "haters are my motivators". All their doing is making Phelps better with every negative comment! Type A personalities are already competitive as it is. Phelps will use this fuel to bring home more Gold in 2012. Ironically Phelps isn't the one asking to be beat, Clary is!
-
Clary should keep his mouth shut. Jealousy is an ugly characteristic. He can't beat Michael Phelps and he can't stand it.
-
Ok this is easy Clary thinks he works twice as hard and still cant beat Phelps and thats why he is talking trash.... and smoking to relax and race???? the only place to race after smoking is to get somthing to eat!!! stop being a robot i bet you voted for Bush both times!!
-
From Clary's earlier comment about Phelps' work ethic, he was just saying he could have an even greater legacy than he already has. He did not down play what Phelps had already accomplished, he was just saying that he thought if Phelps practiced harder, he might even surpass what he has already accomplished. Could you imagine beating his own records to the point no one will reach them for a long time in the future? Sure he will get more medals and break another Olympic record for medals earned, but what about being his age and setting personal best and world records showing how great you are! I think that is all Clary was getting to in his comments. Media writers are always trying to make something out of nothing.
-
When Tyler Clary has 14 gold medals around his neck he can criticize Michael Phelps training methods--UNTIL THEN, HE SHOULD HOLD HIS TONGUE. BTW--Phelps "doobie" incident was not within months of a competition and our last three presidents admit to pot use (or in Bush's case cocaine) at his age.
-
How’s the view from the “Phelps” wave pool? Not great I have to cry to get noticed.
-
when clary has accomplished all that michael has and competes in ALL the events michael does, then maybe he might be able to call him out. and i swam for 20 yrs competitively and yes i smoked before a race or 2. i still won cus i was the best in my division at the time.
