Hope Solo was conceived during a conjugal visit

When you watch an athlete on TV or while attending a game, you don't really think about who they are as a person. You don't really think about where they came from, what they went through, and what made them who they are. We often just coldly judge athletes based on the hired entertainers we perceive them to be without considering anything else about them. It seems like Hope Solo is trying to change that about herself.
The US women's soccer team goalie has published an autobiography entitled "Solo: A Memoir of Hope" that goes on sale August 14. Excerpts from the book were released on Monday, and they detail Solo's rough upbringing.
Solo says her father was in and out of her life growing up. He had multiple families, fathered children with different women, and had them living in homes paid for by money he embezzled from a company where he worked. Solo described him as a con man and ladies man who "was unreliable at best and a criminal at worst."
And get this: Solo says she was conceived during a conjugal visit while her father was serving a prison sentence in Washington.
That's enough to give you an idea of how rough things were for Hope. She says she's made peace with her father and that has helped prevent her from being bitter and angry.
Solo described the process of divulging all her secrets as therapeutic, comparing it to having a childhood counselor.
"It was hard. I came to grips with a lot of difficulties that I’ve overcome," Solo told NBC. "Each challenge kind of makes you who you are. It wasn’t always a good thing. I have my own struggles in my life because of the things I was forced to overcome. So it was hard, it was a reality check, for sure. But I am really happy I’ve done it.
"I just want people to not judge with their eyes, but judge with their hearts, and I think that’s what this book is all about," she says.
The book comes out August 14. Based on the excerpt and how openly Solo speaks in general, the book should be excellent.

Why do insensitive and stupid people like you have to "squeeze" this irrelevant post here ?"
-
Hey bianzhi, do they have any young women there that would like an older man. Ask around and let me know would ya. I'm short, got a belly, most of my teeth, some gray hair, no other color to mess with it. Oh and most of all I'm trying to live off my SS check. But it comes every month like clock work.

eye gots aids do da chicke like that. eye also have pain win eye urinate

don.t care

I think the fact that Hope has overcome this and become the soccer player she is disproves the idea a child born and raised in less than ideal circumstances can excel if they set their mind to it. When we have lawyers that say so and so came from a broken home and thus didn't have the advantages of a normal childhood is pure bunk. These kids from the ghetto can succeed and break away from that if they set their mind to it.
-
Yea, all you need to be is a 1 in a million soccer phenom. I am getting sick of these people that won the genetic lottery telling everyone the message that "if you work hard, u can do anything." I would rather get that message from someone who worked hard, went to school, started their own business and truly made it the way "real" people have to.w
-
Don't like it? Then don't read it dum-@$$!
-
Not even close to the same thing. If you actually read through the story you could see & tell that her father was a "white collar" criminal, he embezzled funds & had her living in HOMES. So it wasn't like she was growing up in "ghetto's" she probably grew up in a decent suburb & she had a neglectful father, that's like 50% of the US. Okay her father was a convict but he wasn't a hardcore criminal.
So let's not try to lump her story in with "I came from the hard knocks streets" those kids REALLY have a tall ladder to climb. Hope, not so much? -
If you read through the teaser you would remember the sheriff kicked her and her mom and brother out of their house because her dad stole their mom's mortgage money, took their car because he hadn't been making payments, and then she lived with her brother and alcoholic mom on the bad side of town. The dad was gone by the time she was six, sleeping on the floor of where he worked part time, and completely gone by the time she was eight. In fact she said his first family also lost their home early on and lived off minimum wage. Not sure how any of that adds up to a decent life in the suburbs. I think you had reading comprehension fail, mate.

If they have at least one parent who cares.

WHO CARES

I fail to see what the big to-do is about Hope Solo. She may be a good goalie, but is very over hyped. She was a bitch on dancing with the stars and she's not that good looking.
-
What, she turn you down for a date?
-
she can probably just shut her mouth now .. I think she's said enough for one lifetime and besides ... save it for a book ... geez ....
-
Yes, she has. I am with you.
If I want to know what she has to say I will pay the 19.99 or whatever for her book. Well I could wait for a month after the Olympics and the book will probably be in the $5 bin.
From a few things I have readabout her she is a piece of work. Difficult and has no filters when she opens her mouth. I hope that HOPE can zip it and focus on what she can do best and that is play soccer. She should filter herself and not be a distraction to her teammates. You know the ones that dont have million $$ book deals and endorsements, the ones that just want to earn a gold medal. -
What relevance does your remarks have with what the topic is all about?
By the way, she's the best goalie the US women's team has. Hope is merely telling her story, not asking for your sympathy, because she surely doesn't neeed it. She should be applauded, after overcoming so many obstacles placed before her. Yes, she's come a long way - much longer than you, I know - one who's just full of envy ! -
While Hope's struggles may have been very tough, I know a few people who went through far more obstacles than she did. Not saying she didn't have it tough, but other folks have it a lot tougher. At any rate...GO TEAM USA!!!!
-
Just remember one thing about this person / goalie / teammate who some of you are lauding here. A few years back, when she felt that she should have played nstead of the goalie who was ahead of her, instead of keeping it in house and trying to do the right / fair thing, she instead chose to speak poorly about her teammate Brianna Scurry and the coaching staff publicly in the news. I do not care for anyone who throws their teammates, coworkers or peers under the bus to try and get ahead. That is a bigger issue in everyday life and sports than anyone wants to talk about. Values and fair play in sports and in life are crumbling all around us and we need to start a trend towards showing everyone what the right thing to do is all about. BTW, I do not care who you are or how good a player you are, fair is fair and the right thing to do is always the right thing to do!
-
Only problem with your post is Hope was merely stating truthful facts.
-
Hope had been the starting keeper for two years and had three shutouts leading into that match. Everyone at the time thought it was stupid he benched her since she carried them through to that game and was our goalkeeper. Scurry was the backup keeper and hadn't played a game in months and the rust clearly showed by how bad she played. The ball literally dribbled over the line at times. Next time you rant get the details right at least. The coach was the problem in that situation and he lost his job for it. Scurry should have never been on the field and didn't deserve to be thrust into that job with a day's notice. We are just lucky Solo was brought back into the team and she proved her words by shutting out Brazil 10 months later to get the gold.
-
Bravo! Great answer. Knicksfan & DukePanthers are clueless.
-
She should have NEVER worn the USA jersey again after that incident!
-
Knicksfan: I agree with you. What Hope did to Brianna was a violation of the unspoken code of a team-mate. I remeber that game, granted Brianna could have stopped possibly 1 of the goals but as a father of a keeper and coach, there are 10 other players who have a responsibility to stop goals as well. If an NFL, NBA, or MLB player had done that you would call them a DIVA, or a brat. Having said that I love team USA and that includes Hope....... On a side note Hope only has 4 years left, as my daughter will be taking her spot on team USA!!!!
-
I really detest people who pander for sympathy. Leave it in the past. Be happy you made it. Stop bringing the rest of us down. Grow up.
-
When you write about everything you didn't do that you should have done, and leave out everything you did that you shouldn't have done, that's an autobiography. The objective is to sell books.
-
She is one of the best soccer goalies in the world and the media wants to pretend that they didn't dig for this. This lady is one in a million WHO care how she got there!!!! Congratulations Hope in being special.
-
Don't you feel sorry for us poor folks who didn't make it in life because we didn't have any obstacles to overcome? If only I had life a little rougher and had a few more hills to climb just to prove I could do it in spite of all the crap I had to go through to get where I got, I could be a famous something or other, too.
The point?
We all have our story.
You don't want to read mine.
I don't want to read yours, either. -
This book is going to be epic. I can't wait to read the rest of it just based on the hearsay thrown around over the years.
-
Her Daddy issues will make her special with the guys at the Olympic Village :-)
-
I am honestly tired hearing about Hope Solo and her antics, please lets focus on the team and not continually one person. All I care about is that the ladies get their goal so they get over the feeling of loss at the World Cup last year.
-
why are some of you people so down on her or anyone else? She found her way to what she is good at some just want to tear her down? I dont get it! shes going to the olympics should that not be a big deal? She never said she has daddy issues, you people are. Does everbody have to go to school to be sucsful? Everybody should be able to be who they want to be. No one is forceing you to read her story,And ever girl that has any talent is always called a B**** just cause she stands up to all and maybe they deserved it? And we are all AMRICANS that should stand together for all of are talented people no matter what that talent is? Or does it make you people fill better about yourself to tear others down?
-
OK, so is her aim to make us more forgiving of her bad attitude. She gets a "get out of jail free card" for her crappy attitude. She is a totally self centered/serving and that's ok, but don't make it anything it's not. Don't get me wrong I'd love to have her on my team, you need players with a chip on their sholder, if it gives them a competitive edge. but she is no poster child for good sportsmanship. Maybe she is a true reflection of American Women's sports, and what does that say about the culture of our women athletes.
-
I have just had my bubble busted by reading about this.
I admired her when I read numerous times when she told of supporting her 'homeless', vietnam vet father that lived in the woods by her house. this was written up when she was getting such criticism of her attitude and being kicked off the team.
know. I really wonder just where she is coming from. not taking away from her soccer abilities but of her 'innocence'.
-
What, are most of you immature 10 year olds? Sheesh, if not interested don't buy the book.
Hope is gorgeous and very talented. One of the, if not the best goalies, in the world in her prime.
Right on haymay -
Some people try to trivialize the struggles of someone like this because they want only black people to be seen as disadvantaged. It's an obvious ploy to get race-based special favors from the government. BTW, I think she's good looking. MUCH better looking than those hyenalike tennis sisters. -
OMG, where did all of this hate come from? Most of you are pathetic losers who sit at home all day on your computer watching Jerry Springer & Maury while spewing your negativity towards others. Get. A. Life. Loser!
When Hope spoke out she had a right to do so. She had been the goalie that got the team to that game that Scurry lost. And make no mistakes, Scurry's play in the net did cost the USA the game.
Go HOPE! Go USA!
-
Hey everybody, you all have valid points and even if we do not all agree with each other, I still believe that we all need to carry urselves and teach those that are coming up behind us what we should be doing and how we should be carrying ourselves. I am not a soccer fan but I do know that Hope Solo is a very talented goalie and has won numerous bg games for team USA. That was not my point. I did not like how she handled herself that day as it related to others on and around the team. I am a big Cowboys fan (please don't start a whole new discussion on that) and as talented as T.O. was, I did not want him on my team before during or after his stay. Talent can definitely win, but when the talent is not there or is stripped away, what are you left with? I would like to see u get back to being better people overall. I love sports and I thnk that we have forgotten what sports can REALLY do for all of us, our children and the world. Sorry about the soap box but it seems like you all have a good head and heart in this forum.
-
that my friend is heart of it all. In the past I have participated in amateur sports at a fairly high level and would like to paraphrase an article I read years ago. A noble prize winner was being interviewed and asked what section of the newspaper (NYtimes) he turned to first. He said the sports page. the interviewer was fairly shocked expecting some other lofty section of the paper and asked why. the response was.. roughly ... 'I open to the sports section because it reports on humans excelling at what they do'.
now that was many years ago and has changed fairly dramatically if you follow the sports media. the other day on line ESPN (no dif than the others) I counted in their splash page about 7 out of 10 of the headlines that focused on the failure of individuals or groups. I believe that sports illustrated led the parade prior to the internet in what I call ambush type journalism that basically does a character assassination type of sports journalism.
relative to hope and this article is seems so out of context of what she has accomplished that she needs to seem to confess about her parent(s). what does it accomplish? she has now made the leap from a top level athlete to a celebrity? is this what it is all about? so sad. -
BTW, she is a very pretty woman. She is a very talented goalie and best of all... she plays for team USA. I undertand why she felt the way that she did as she is obviously a world class competitor and hates to lose as we all do. I do not care that she is white or that Brianna Scurry is black. Race (unfortunately does) but should not matter when it comes to how people conduct themselves. It really shouldn't matter at all with anything we do or talk about. What matters is how you compete and how you carry yourself. I know, wishful thinking...
One other point... if Dez Bryant did put his hands on his mother, I cannot root for him either. No man should ever put his hands on his mother or any woman for that matter. I would be a hypocrite if I root for this guy if he did that to his mom, especially if he does not issue a truly heartfelt apology and then complete a thorogh counseling program. We all deserve a second chance.
