Gabby Douglas gets hair makeover from celebrity stylist

One of the most inane controversies of the London Olympics was about Gabby Douglas' hair. While the 16-year-old was busy competing for gold medals, she was being trashed on social media by some for what they perceived to be an embarrassing hairstyle. Now those critics no longer have ammunition.
Douglas, her agent, and manager got together with celebrity stylist Ted Gibson and asked him to give the gymnast a hair makeover. Gibson, who charges $950 per haircut, happily obliged. He also lashed out at Douglas' critics.
“I couldn’t believe it and still can’t,’’ Gibson said of the criticism, according to The Daily Beast. “You have this young girl doing amazing things, and the conversation becomes about her hair? It was ridiculous and shameful.”
Gibson said he wanted to create a hairstyle for Douglas that wouldn't make her look older than her age.
"I hope we can create something that’s easy and looks great no matter what she’s doing or where she is. I hope to create something that makes her feel good about herself as well," he told The Daily Beast.
Most people would agree that Douglas looks great with the new 'do. Hopefully this will end the chatter about the silly matter.

Not sure I understand why anyone criticized her hair. She's a gymnast. All gymnasts and dancers wear their hair the same way---in a bun or back in a ponytail with clips like this girl. You can't have hair hanging in your face when you are doing the stuff they are doing.
-
Such a pretty girl. I could care less how she wears her hair. With a smile like THAT, who really notices??? That smile conveys A LOT more than any hairdo ever can.

Gabby had to deal with a bunch of "Divas" scared to death of going to the gym. Don't want to "sweat" out the "Do". Simpletons, who would rather wear hundred dollars Nikes in casual mode then actually using them for their designed use. They should be ashamed of yourselves for treating this young gymnast so wrong. Haters !!! step up and improve your own image. Morons....
-
lol i dont like her but im not moron and ive improved on my image by owning a classic car and winning car show awards/tropheys. so you should'nt assume just cause we dont like someone doesnt mean were a lowlifer like you
-
Wow casey11992,..... I never even directed this comment to you.. are you implying that you made a comment about Gabby? Remember, you quoted "lol i dont like her". The subject was the mistreatment of a young lady, not your classic car and car show tropheys? Wow... You are definitely within Gabby's sphere of influence. Not. Stick to the topic.
-
You don't like her? Are you telling me, that you are a grown man, because you win classic car shows, and you don't like an innocent kid who have just accomplished something great, winning 2 gold medals for her country, and havent wronged you in no capacity, and you don't like her? You are a total lowlife my friend.
-
Didn't your mom ever tell you that if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. You don't have to like her but you will show her respect. And your so called 'life improvements' is nothing more then flashing people that you have money try something more like that will benfit you in a self growing way. Oh and P.S you are a moron with that littlr comment you made...
-
Amen!!!

How did our Country get so bad that we make a 16 year old girl feel bad about the way her hair looks, when she has just won TWO Gold Medals for the USA? This is sad people. Not the two comments tonight but back when this was going on doing the Olympics, I really sat home and cried for that child!! She had won two Gold medals and could have won another one especially on the uneven bars and she reads her tweets and they are criticizing her hair. Shameful that we would make anyone especially a 16 year child feel bad about the way her hair looked. And people wonder why teenage suicide is up??? Take a look in the mirror people.
-
Who cares about her hair. I would not expect her to be perfectly groomed while performing. If she was I would say something's wrong there. What? People just needed to find fault?
Palease -
What is the message in this story? I saw nothing wrong with her hair. I saw a freaking awesome gymnast. If Mr. $950 Putzwanger was sincere, he'd have not agreed to change her hair. By doing so, he only validated those morons who complained about her hair in the first place. But at least the hypocrite got some publicity out of the situation, even if at the expense of a talented young woman's self esteem. He's probably the same creep who did the new Miley Cyrus 'do.
-
You're absolutely right. Mr. Gibson should not have agreed to do Gabby's hair. In doing so, he reinforced that the shallow people who imposed their inferiority-complex-laced opinions on Gabby were correct. In my opinion, both Gabby's agent and manager should be fired. They do not have her best interests at heart. They cared more about others' opinions than the self-esteem, self-value, and self-worth of a child who has accomplished more than most at the tender age of 16. Do you all remember what it was like to be a teenager trying to navigate the turbulent waters of your budding identity and being bombarded with esteem issues of not feeling good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, etc? For most, teenage season was hell. And to think that this child had to deal with dumb criticism about her hair while she competed! How shameful! What you've done is communicate to this child that some aspect of her is not good enough -- that she is defined by her hair. And that is a blatant lie! Gabby - and every aspect of herself, is good enough as she is. She is MORE THAN ENOUGH! Her critics, mostly black women, need to get over themselves, get some real self-value and self-worth from within and stop defining themselves by their own or "purchased" hair. Do something more meaningful with your hair/weave money. How about going natural with your hair (which you will discover is gorgeous if you closely examine your unique curl pattern and texture) and then pool the money you would save to sponsor well deserving little girls everywhere who do not have the resources to take lessons in gymnastics, tennis, archery, etc. Let’s develop little girls throughout the USA, like Gabby, who managed to become a champion on the world stage at the tender age of 16. You go, Gabby! You are a world class champion on a bad day! DO YOU!!! p.s. To Gabby: Find handlers (agents, managers, etc.) that will partner with you in developing your character, self-worth, and self-value from within. Stay clear of those who want you to define yourself by others’ opinions.

i was impressed that she appeared to be that rare commodity these days , ' a young lady" . She was not over-painted , appeared to be enjoying her childhood . Her Olympic endeavours certainly demonstrates the discipline and grace one would expect of such a champion . The Europeans , Chinese and Japanese , will certainly remember her for her determination , confidence and a seeming lack of guile , in other words she appears unspoilt and "innocent" .She will be an effective sales woman for many an American product , especially those aimed at those markets . We tend to be unique in demanding that our girls , become women before their childhood ends . There are those who will have other concerns about the colour of her hair, eyes and skins . I will encourage the markeeters to get past these things and" exploit ", this charming champion .

I'm a harcore TUFF GUY but... I am sooooooooooooo VERY PROUD of Gabby for her hard work, dedication and sheer awesomeness... she brings tears to my eyes and chokes me-up even a week after the Olympics. GABBY DOUGLAS is THE COOLEST PERSON on planet Earth. GREAT JOB GABBY. You'd be gorgeous even without hair. Anyone who complains about it is such a jealous idiot(s) so PLEASE don't pay attention to them. YOU are THE BEST. I wish you the longest, happiest and healthiest life. GABBY DOUGLAS is my HERO!!! I'm a world famous white guy (Wayne Victor Dennis) and Gabby is still MY all-time HERO and will always be.
-
i dont even care about her or the olympics so why are we still hearing about this in the news? save the msn space for real news and events not hairstyle worthless news reports, in other words i took a huge crap the size of a corn on the cob quick put that in also for a report...
-
Oh Casey11992...I'm so proud of you for taking a dump! You're such a big boy/girl! But despite what you think...your dump stinks just like anyone elses.
As for the telling us to "save the msn space for real news"...apparently, you're wasting space by complaining about it all. Just suck it up and deal with the article. Life will go on for you. -
I saw nothing wrong with Gabby's hair at the Olympics. I LOVED your hair Gabby! Gabby wore her hair like all the other gymnasts. So, what is the problem??? Just a bunch of haters. Congrats on your medals!!! Now, I don't know why Gabby paid almost $1000.00 to get a new look. I'm sorry but $1000.00 for a haircut? Are you serious? It dosen't look any different than how her hair was before??? I was scrolling down the page to see the "new look" and realized that I was looking at it??? Gabby, save your money or go to a less expensive hair stylist that would do a better job, if you really want a "new look".
-
Give it a rest. Nobody loved her hair. Please. It's hair. No one cared about her hair. Just say that instead of blowing smoke up everybody's ass. Everybody's laying it on so thick it's gone from being a nice gesture to just fake. She isn't stupid.
And Gabby can spend $1,000 on her hair if she feels like. She's going to be a very wealthy woman now. -
Why react to this nonesense? Gabby is what she is and we are proud of her. This is the problem with our situation today! always have to react to nonesense. Gabby is our USA girl and we love her..no matter how she has her hair. She is a beauty and accomplished no matter what her hair. I am a 70 year old white guy and am proud of her and how she did. Gabby...do your hair how ever the hell you like and don't react to the jerks who have no life. You are a pretty girl no matter your hair and that is not important anyway.. Whats important is our special skills of which you have plenty. Be you and go forward. You will be fine and we will hold you in special place. All the best.
-
Yes it looks better. But saying so is apparently frowned upon.
-
Gabby hair was fine, that creep gave Gabby a 950.00 weave, that's ridiculouse, Gabby should have just had a very low hair style like the fine female track star Jeter.
-
I think she is an awesome athlete with a terrific team-spirit and personality to match!!! What she accomplished was totally amazing!! She is a natural beauty full of life, energy and spirit! And what a great smile!!! Shame on any that were critical of something so silly as hair.I truly believe those kind to be envious of her. Thank God we have natural people in this world such as Gabby!!! Go Team Gabby, You Rock!!!

Love Gabby and respect her accomplishments but I was hoping that as a young Black athlete, she would have embrassed her beautiful natural hair instead of going with a more expensive weave. . . As Dominique Dawes stated, 'her life would be so much easier if she could find a way to do so'----as she learned later in life. . .It saddens me to know that our Black women are allowing someone else to define beauty for them. . . You're an incredibly beautiful young lady, Gabby!

The remarks made about Gabby's hair were not indicative of the entire nation. Those remarks were made by people ignorant to her hair type. Personally, I thought her hair looked very cute during the olympics...what was the problem? Oh, yeah...people who don't understand the difficulties faced by women with African-American hair. From what some of my students have told me...woman with this hair-type have to be very careful not to overwork their hair as it can cause it to break off. People with european-american hair do not have the same issues. Miss Douglas made us proud, as a nation, when she won those Gold Medals. It took years of work and dedication to get to that stage. THAT is what we should be focusing on...not the fact that her hair didn't look like everyone else's hair...SO WHAT..it was still CUTE!!!!!! For those who don't get it...try to do a routine on any aparatus like Gabby did...yeah, didn't think so...
-
Can we leave this pretty gold medalist and the topic of her hair alone. Why was this article even written? Folks are stupid!!!!

I think that the media has a lot to do with this issue...NBC in particular seemed almost offened by the fact that Gabby was doing so well,,she was doing so well, it was good eough for a Gold Metal..It was like almost insulting to listen to the announcers when she performed,,They thought that she (Gabby),,would break under the pressure---she did not---the other girls Did!! Especially the one young lady that had previously won the World's championship earlier this year!!! So, it was not really was not about Gabby's Hair!!!
-
Gabby, pay no attention to those who would belittle your style, grace and beauty. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who only feel good about themselves, by trashing others. You just keep doing what you have to do, and pay no attention to those who have no idea what you and gymnastics are all about. You rock babe!
-
It's sad that people are not excited or happy when someone does good. Why would Gabby have her hair fixed up while competing in gymnastics? What sense does that make. Whoever made that statement is unhappy and unsuccessful with themselves. When you're not successful in your life or your career, you will always find fault in someone else; and that is real sad. Whoever made that statement about Gabby's hair, I hope their hair is "on point" every single day!!!!
