It's not uncommon for synchronized swimming teams to pick a song from their nation's history. Australia, however, may have wished that they picked something a little deeper from their timeline. 

The Brisbane Times reported that Australia's final choice for a song to synchronize to was "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC. 

The team and the coach decided on the song for their final performance together and they admitted that it was a risky move, but they hoped the quirky choice would sway the judges to their side. 

That didn't happen. The team got a score of 77.430, putting them in last place among the eight finalists. 

It may have been a sad ending, but I'm sure it's for the best. If they did well with a song from their native AC/DC, then the US team might think that playing a Molly Hatchet song during the 2016 Games would be a good idea.

The sports world is full of guys and gals with cool and catchy names: Picabo Street, Champ Bailey, Stylez G. White. However, Brazil's soccer team has a player in its ranks who may just have a name that has more coolness than any name in sports history. That includes Dick Butkus.

Brazil put a new forward in their game against Mexico on Saturday. He name is Hulk, according to The Associated Press. That's his full name. It's just "Hulk".

He originally played on the country's reserve team. Coach Mano Menezes put him in the game as they were struggling to overcome a 1-0 deficit.

Hulk managed to help his team stop Mexico's onslaught and even scored a rallying goal but it wasn't enough to turn things around for Brazil. They lost 2-1 giving Mexico their first gold medal in soccer.

We're sure the loss made Hulk angry, but none of the reporters wanted to see him when he was angry.

NBC has taken a ton of heat during these Olympics, mostly for its decision to tape delay marquee events to take advantage of lucrative primetime ratings. The Peacock Network also took its share of lumps on the first day of the Games for not live streaming the Opening Ceremony online (with the laughable excuse that it was too "complex") and also editing out sensitive portions of the show for its TV broadcast.

But, in a change of heart, the network has decided it will end its coverage of the Games of the XXX Olympiad properly by carrying Sunday's Closing Ceremony live online in addition to its tape delayed broadcast on TV later on in primetime. NBC has already been live streaming every event on NBCOlympics.com. Here's NBC Sports' statement on the decision, via Sports Business Journal's John Ourand:

“It’s part of our continuing effort to innovate, experiment and learn. This is not precedent setting, but rather another chance for us to gather data about how live streaming and television complement each other.”

We're glad to see NBC caving in after all the negative feedback, even if it won't freely admit that's the case here. Hopefully this is a sign that the network is going change the way it covers future Olympiads. Either that or NBC just couldn't bring itself to snubbing the Spice Girls.

While the "McKayla is Not Impressed" meme exploded online this week, it would have been understandable if McKayla Maroney herself was displeased by it. But in a tweet Maroney sent on Saturday, she showed not only that she's being a good sport about the online phenomenon she's at the center of but also that she might even be a fan of it.

Maroney and gymnastics teammate Aly Raisman were supposed take part in a friendly swim race on Saturday, but when they arrived at the pool they were denied.

Just take a guess what Maroney's reaction was.

She tweeted the above photo of her, Raisman and Kyla Ross with the message, "The pool is closed.. #notimpressed."

The London Olympics will come to a close on Sunday evening, and the US has officially announced that track and field athlete Bryshon Nellum will be the country’s flag bearer during the Closing Ceremony. Nellum will lead a squad of 529 athletes as they say farewell to London and many look forward to Brazil in 2016.

Nellum is a first-time Olympian who ran the first leg of the men’s 4x400m relay, an event in which Team USA took home a silver medal.

The 23-year-old’s road to the Olympics was extremely difficult. During his freshman year at the University of Southern California in 2009, Nellum was shot in the legs by gang members in a car that pulled up alongside him when he was walking home from a party. He was left with injuries in each thigh and his right hamstring, and doctors told him that it was highly unlikely he would ever reach world-class speed again.

“I’m humbled by this incredible privilege,” Nellum said in a statement Friday according to the LA Times. “Four years ago, I wasn’t sure I would ever run again, and now I’m leading Team USA into the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. I’m so grateful for the incredible support of my friends and family and I’ll never forget these Games.”

After three separate surgeries (the most recent of which was a year ago) that hampered his recovery, Nellum was able to defy the odds and make his way to London. As the Olympic torchbearer who got this embarrassing tattoo would likely tell him, the best thing he can do is enjoy the experience for what it is and try not to get too wrapped up in the moment.

Carli Lloyd is an Olympic hero. She earned that honor by scoring both of the U.S. women’s soccer team’s goals on Thursday during their 2-1 win over Japan in the gold medal game. As we know, the London Olympics have been a very busy time for all of the athletes involved. Twitter makes it slightly easier to stay up on what’s going on in the world, but it is not always that simple. A recent exchange of tweets between Lloyd and former Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino proved that earlier this week.

As the average baseball fan could tell you, Victorino has not played for Philadelphia since July 29. In fact, he has already taken on a leadership role with his new team, the Dodgers. As the Philadelphia fan blog The 700 Level pointed out, Lloyd is from a part of New Jersey that is relatively close to Philly. If she’s a Phillies fan and likes really does like the Flyin’ Hawaiian, she’s probably disappointed now. At least Carli can always dig out that old Nike celebration shirt if she starts feeling blue.

Have you ever wanted to sleep in the same bed as Michael Phelps? Chances are that won't happen. You've got a better shot with Ryan Lochte, according to his mother.

You can also just cut out the middleman (so to speak) and buy the actual bed that he slept in during the Olympics at a website that is selling off all of the items used in the Olympic Village, according to The Associated Press.

The appropriately named "Remains of the Games" has started putting everything up for sale from big items like beds and cabinets down to the smallest goods like closet hangers and traffic wands.

They authenticate each item with a gold plate that reads, "This product was proudly made and supplied to the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games," according to the FAQ.

It might sound like a quick way to cash in on the Games long after the torch has been extinguished, but all the stuff they use in the Village was put together and used for just a couple of weeks. If they didn't sell it, all of the stuff would just go to waste.

It also doesn't say if any famous names have used any of the items left in their rooms. Personally, I'm hoping they put Usain Bolt's sense of humility up for sale. I'm sure he left it in there when the Games started and it probably isn't very used.

NBC has gotten a lot of guff for their coverage of the Games whether they're turning female athletes into pieces of viral meat or spoiling key events before they air. Apparently, even some of the officials can't stand to have NBC around them.

NBC's ringside commentators have been bugging the heck out of the referees in the boxing ring. So the refs have asked them to leave, according to Reuters.

The London organizing committee sided with the refs and asked NBC's chatterboxers to take it to the media booth. A spokesperson for the International Boxing Association (AIBA) said the commentators declined the offer and opted instead to stop covering the remaining matches since no American boxers are in the running for a medal.

NBC denied the AIBA's claim that they refused to cover the rest of the Games. A network spokesperson also said they were appealing the decision to the IOC.

After watching the US team's lackluster performance in the boxing arena, I'm wondering if some NBC executives should join the team. Lately, they seem to be very good at getting into fights.

Spelman College president Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum is denying a report that the historically black women's school is recruiting gold-medalist Gabby Douglas "hard."

TMZ.com on Thursday published a story saying Tatum was in London actively recruiting Douglas, 17, to enroll at the Atlanta college. The story also included a photo of the gymnast posing with a Spelman gift bag.

While Tatum was in London during the Olympics, she said it was not to recruit Douglas and that the two have never met.

"I don't really know anything about Gabby other than she won a gold medal," Tatum told The Huffington post. "Any young person with the drive and discipline required to achieve world-class excellence is likely to have what it takes to be successful in college."

Tatum did say, however, she played a role in giving Douglas the gift bag, which contained a Spelman shirt and a CD with an original song by one of the school's students.

Before making the trip, Tatum knew her friend and Spelman alumna Helen Smith Price would have the opportunity of meeting Douglas at the Games, so Tatum had Price deliver the bag to the women's all-around gold medalist. In addition to the CD and shirt, Tatum included a personal note to Douglas.

"In my note, I told her how proud so many of us are at Spelman College of her achievement," Tatum said. "I said, 'We don't have a gymnastics team at our college, but when you look at colleges I hope you'll look at Spelman.'"

It's probably a good thing Spelman doesn't have gymnastics team. There was probably an NCAA violation or five in this story. But go Jaguars!

Betty Heidler of Germany is the world-record holder in women's hammer throw and was expected to be a medal favorite at the Olympics. She'll leave London with a bronze medal, but it didn't come without controversy.

Heidler leaped from ninth place to the medal stand Friday after a controversial ruling on her fifth of six throws. Because of "technical problems," officials were unable to mark where her hammer landed on the attempt. They had no other option but to have Heidler re-throw, which ended up being a foul.

Heidler was unable to improve her previous best of 73.90 meters on her sixth and final throw. And it appeared Russia's Tatyana Lysenko, Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk and China's Zhang Wenxiu were poised for gold, silver and bronze, respectively. That's when things got interesting.

Some nudging from Heidler and the German team led officials to reportedly use TV replays to spot the mark of Heidler's original fifth throw. And lo, the divot was found. It was measured at 77.12 meters, good enough to knock Zhang, who at this point was already in the middle of a celebratory lap draped in the Chinese flag, off the medal stand.

Naturally, Chinese officials appealed the decision on Zhang's behalf but to no avail, still causing the medal ceremony to be postponed until Saturday.

But you can't knock the Germans for encouraging officials to look at the replays. It's abundantly clear the only ones to blame for this mess are the officials who inexcusably couldn't register Heidler's mark to begin with.
